Logline
In a rugged coastal village, a young man is unjustly blamed for a tragic accident at sea. Ostracised by his community, he turns away from the shoreline to embark on a defiant quest to fly.

Synopsis
Cal is an outsider in his own village — a quiet soul more interested in the wind than the nets. While he yearns for a life beyond the horizon, his brother, Saul, and the local fishermen expect him to fall in line and stay grounded in their harsh, repetitive reality.

Following a freak accident on the fishing boat Maria, Cal is scapegoated for a disaster he didn’t cause. Physically scarred and socially isolated, he finds an unexpected connection with a kindred spirit who shares his obsession with flight. Together, they begin the impossible task of building a glider from scraps, challenging the weight of their environment and the cruelty of a village that fears anything it cannot control.

DIRECTOR’S VISION

“This film explores the human condition through the myth of Sisyphus—the search for meaning within a seemingly meaningless existence and the dignity found in the struggle.” — Ariel Artur

THE PROJECT

Cal is a feature-length drama rooted in Magical Realism and the traditions of Transcendental Cinema. Inspired by the works of Alice Rohrwacher, Bruno Dumont and Apichatpong Weerasetakul, the film contrasts the gritty, tactile life of a fishing community with the ethereal aspirations of its protagonist. It is a story about an outsider who follows his own instincts in a world that demands he do the opposite.
